One of my areas of speciality when it comes to therapy and counselling for psychological challenges is helping individuals from the BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) community cope with the complexities of life in a multicultural society.
With my African heritage I am well-placed to offer holistic and compassionate support to troubled clients dealing with the multi-faceted impact of racism in society.
I have undergone training in the Black Empathic Approach to therapy – a term coined by the renowned Dr Isha Mckenzie-Mavinga – writer/poet, reiki master and integrative transcultural psychotherapist. This approach is defined as “understanding and paying attention to the emotions evoked by racism”.
I am able to deliver individually tailored and culturally sensitive counselling and therapy to people of various ethnic backgrounds, connecting with them through a shared understanding of racism and the associated mental health issues.
My proficiency in several South African languages is a technical advantage which assists me in communicating with black South Africans in the UK in particular.
My person-centred therapy model is flexible and adaptable to each client’s needs as therapy progresses.
I offer face-to-face counselling at my practice in central Salisbury, Wiltshire, or you can arrange a remote session via Zoom, Skype, phone or email from anywhere in the world.
Most people find it easier to speak to someone from the same or a similar background to their own, not just because they feel they can relate more easily, but because they believe there will be a greater sense of empathy.
Empathy and being non-judgmental are principles that I bring to all my therapy and counselling sessions no matter who the client is, but when it comes to BAME individuals these are even more important.
Racism has many mental health consequences, leaving people feeling:
All these effects can escalate into specific mental health problems. Talking things through with me can help you explore your difficult feelings and experiences. I can’t fix racism, but I can help you cope with discrimination and prejudice at various levels of society.
